Art and Design

Mrs. Kell-Clarke is our Art Subject Leader

In Art & Design, we inspire pupils to acquire the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express their responses to ideas and experiences in a visual or tactile form, to fire their imagination and enable a fundamental means of personal expression.

Pupils are given opportunities for reflection and appreciation to develop and acquire the ability to make informed, critical responses to their own and others’ work.  Pupils also study the work of artists and gain access to cultural richness and diversity.

By allowing all children to access art, all children at Mary Exton will be able to access Art. Children experience different media throughout their years at Mary Exton. Homework as well as practical classroom activities in Art are included in planning.

Subject Leader Action Plan

Access Art is the progression document used at Mary Exton. Art is taught in throughout the year by the classroom teachers. This may look different in every year group. Some teachers opt to teach art weekly while others prefer to teach art as block lessons over a number of weeks.

Through formative assessment, teachers questioning, checking knowledge at the beginning of a unit to ensure links with past learning. Progress in books monitored.

We are aware, due to the school closure 2019/2020 and 2021 and the restrictions of virtual learning, some children were unable to access practical Art and we are therefore focusing on more hands-on experiences. This focus has been more so in 2021/22 than theoretical
