English - Phonics

At Mary Exton, we believe that learning to read fluently and confidently is one of the most important skills our children will ever develop. Phonics lays the foundation for this success, enabling pupils to decode words, recognise sounds and build solid reading and spelling skills that open up learning across the curriculum.

We follow Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, a high-quality, evidence-based and Department for Education-validated phonics programme. Little Wandle supports children to learn the alphabetic code in a structured and consistent way, and provides staff with the training, resources and assessment tools to deliver phonics effectively.
